BC Building Code – Braced Wall Design

As of March 10, 2025, the BC Building Code, Part 9, will mandate specific requirements for braced wall bands in all new residential buildings to ensure structural integrity. BC’s specific environmental
conditions require consideration of both wind and seismic loads when designing a building. This will be a new design requirement for projects in the area. If you are unsure if this applies to you,
please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Braced wall bands are continuous horizontal and vertical bands within a building where braced wall panels are installed. These panels are specially designed to resist lateral forces caused by seismic movements and wind. They are constructed with wood frame walls and sheathed with plywood,
OSB, or drywall.

We have been communicating with local building officials and researching code updates/regulations to ensure an efficient permitting process with braced wall band designs. Our goals are to have our designs minimize complexity and materials to keep project costs reduced. We will utilize BCBC 2024 Part 9 designs wherever possible instead of Part 4 to allow for lighter, more cost-effective construction.
